COMMUNITY EXTENSION DEPARTMENT
The Community Extension Department at Colegio de San Juan de Letran is committed to fostering community service and involvement, actively engaging students and staff in meaningful outreach initiatives. Aligned with the school's mission of shaping Letranites into proactive leaders and well-rounded individuals, the department contributes to national development through hands-on community engagement. It provides students with valuable opportunities to integrate service into their education while empowering partner communities to enhance their quality of life. HISTORY OF THE COMMUNITY EXTENSION DEPARTMENT
In 1989, Rev. Fr. Rogelio B. Alarcon, O.P., Rector and President of Letran, envisioned a program that would integrate education with community service. This vision led to the introduction of the practicum program, where students applied their academic learning through immersion in underserved communities like the Tala Leprosarium. This initiative laid the foundation for building meaningful, lasting partnerships between Letran students and economically disadvantaged families.
In 1992, Rev. Fr. Ramon Cercado, O.P., formalized this outreach by establishing the Extension Services Office, reinforcing the belief that education must foster a connection to the community, teaching students altruism and social responsibility. His successors, Rev. Fr. Edwin A. Lao, O.P., and Rev. Fr. Tamerlane R. Lana, O.P., expanded the scope of Letran’s community engagement, reaching beyond Intramuros to include marginalized communities across Metro Manila and even as far as the Babuyanes Islands.
Under the leadership of Mr. Ronald Dugang, the Community Extension Department launched the Letran BuildHOPE Program, focusing on urban development, educational assistance, and rural mission support. Rev. Fr. Clarence Victor C. Marquez, O.P., further challenged Letran to embody the Dominican pillars of Diakonia (Service), Kerygma (Preaching), and Liturgia (Celebration), deepening Letran’s commitment to serve the forgotten and oppressed.
Today, the Community Extension Department continues to seek opportunities to enrich its programs, ensuring that Letran’s mission of academic excellence and social relevance is lived out in service to those in need.
