The Letran Squires bagged the NCAA 95 Junior Badminton title, edging the erstwhile-undefeated San Sebastian Staglets in two straight sets at the PowerSmash Badminton Center last September 26.
The Squires made sure to list down the first set, despite a valiant effort from the Staglets, 21-16, 21-16, and had to keep their composure down the stretch before assuring themselves of the win, and the title, finishing the game with a 21-14, 30-28 set.
Nathaniel Acedillo, Mark Contreras, Kyles Corcuera, Juztine Davadilla, Frankie Velasco, Jr., Mark Velasco, and Nilon Abella were crowned champions while head coach Jojo Mance was named Coach of the Year.
Mark Velasco was crowned Most Valuable Player.
Ending the elimination period at second place with an 8 – 1 slate, with their sole loss coming off the hands of their eventual finals competition, the Squires entered the semifinals with a twice-to-beat advantage over the San Beda Red Cubs.
Letran fell to San Beda in that game, 21-8, 21-6; 20-22, 14-21; and 10-21, 11-21. It set the Squires with a do-or-die rematch in the afternoon playoffs last September 24.
Letran survived the pesky San Beda side, two sets to one, pitting it against San Sebastian, who blitzed through the eliminations with a perfect record and made short work of the University of Perpetual Help in the semis.
