Civil Engineering students John Paul Alilio, Jeremiah Viado, and John Louie Natanauan successfully defended their title in the 7th Bridge Building Competition last September 17.

“It was a very good feeling,” Alilio said in Filipino, noting that there was pressure, especially because the three of them were last year’s Bridge Building champions.

“We were nervous,” Viado said. “But we just relied on our teamwork.”

A total of 15 schools – 19 teams – competed in the event organized by the Junior Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers.

Apart from the victors, nine other Letranites formed three more groups that participated: Jan Alexie Gonzales, Neriza Joy Turla, and Geoff Xylo Valiente; Ar-Ar Jambalos, Chrisaint Magbanua, and Raymund Anthony Avila; and Lyron Mazon, Raven Patio, and Andrian Caisip.

The participants were given three hours to build a bridge out of straws and had to pass three rounds, or phases – Dimension phase, Two-Way Passable phase, and the strength testing phase. All four teams from Letran made it to the final phase.

Engr. Natassha Mae Quinsaat, the program chairperson of Civil Engineering, and Engr. Juan Carlos Cruz coached the Letran delegates.
