The Colegio received recognition as one of its documentary entries, submitted to University of the Philippines Piling Obrang Vidyo (UP – POV) XIII, was named a finalist, as announced last January 3.

UP – POV XIII, an interschool video competition, hailed Lunas—a documentary written and directed by 4th year Communication student Marvin Cabangunay—as one of the top five in the documentary category.
Cabangunay shared that Lunas is a documentary featuring the story of a Filipino Amyotrohpic Lateral Sceloris (ALS) patient, Eduardo Magtibay from Rosario, Batangas.

Magtibay suffers from ALS for over 15 years now, according to Cabangunay. His disease, which cure is yet to be discovered, has recently been known due to the Ice Bucket Challenge that spread all over the social media early last year.

Similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge, Cabangunay told The Lance that the documentary is part of his and his team’s advocacy of raising ALS awareness.

“’Yung goal naman talaga ng docu namin is to spread awareness about ALS patients. ‘Yun na rin ‘yung tulong namin kay Mang Eduardo. Kaya as much as possible, lahat ng competitions, sasalihan namin,” he said.

At the latter part of the documentary, Lunas showed that though the disease is still incurable, Magtibay has found cure through the love and support of his family.

Asked on what he thinks is their documentary’s edge among others, he said that Lunas is a documentary that has a heart of its own.

“Ang goal kasi namin sa docu namin is mabigyan ng attention ‘yung mga ALS patients dito saPhilippines… hindi naman talaga namin gusto magpaiyak. Siguro kusa na lang s’ya lumabas. Hindi s’ya pilit, hindi katulad ng iba na ang goal lang talaga ay dapat nakakaiyak yung docu nila.”

Moreover, Cabangunay—whose plan is to pursue a career in filmmaking—shared that for a student filmmaker to succeed in storytelling, he must not look at his work as a sheerschool requirement instead, he must bear in mind that he has “a real story of life that is worth sharing.”

Aside from Cabangunay, two other documentary entries from Letran Calamba, namely Lakbay Silok by Anthon Rick dela Cruz and Butil by Roanne Mirabueno, was also named as top 2 and top 4, respectively.

The UP – POV XIII Awarding ceremony was held on January 21 at the Cine Adarna in UP - Diliman where winning pieces will also be shown subsequent to the awarding.

Lunas, a documentary by Sinag Productions, has previously received awards from 28th Gawad CCP Cinemalaya and Silip@Lente's Realifilm, another interschool competition organized by Adamson University.
